The European Union reiterated its commitment to deepening relations with Ethiopia, highlighting media freedom, civic space, and preparations for the country’s upcoming general elections.

Patricia Lombard Cusack, Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service, made the remarks at the ARDA Talk forum organized by the Foreign Affairs Institute. Addressing diplomats, academics, and officials, she said her first visit to Ethiopia since assuming office in September reflects the EU’s view of the country as a “key actor for peace and stability” in the Horn of Africa.

Cusack described the EU-Ethiopia partnership, now celebrating 50 years, as “deep and multifaceted.” She called the forthcoming elections “an important milestone” and stressed that inclusive and trustworthy electoral processes strengthen societies, drawing on the European Union’s own experience.

The comments come amid international attention on Ethiopia’s political environment and efforts to ensure credible, transparent elections.
