EU, Canada, Norway and UK Back AU Mediation Efforts in Northern Ethiopia

The European Union, Canada, Norway and the United Kingdom have backed renewed African Union-led mediation efforts in northern Ethiopia, warning that a new military confrontation in Tigray would have severe consequences for a region already facing drought and significant humanitarian needs.

In a joint statement issued in Addis Ababa, the European Union delegations to Ethiopia and the African Union, together with EU member states and the three other countries, said they were following developments in northern Ethiopia with "great concern".

The governments called on all parties to engage constructively and in good faith in implementing the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA), which ended the two-year war in northern Ethiopia in November 2022.

They welcomed renewed consultations by Olusegun Obasanjo, the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and former president of Nigeria, including his recent visit to Ethiopia and meetings in Addis Ababa and Mekelle.

The statement did not identify specific incidents or parties responsible for the latest tensions in the region.

The governments warned that renewed fighting in Tigray, where humanitarian needs remain high and drought has added pressure on communities, could have severe consequences for the population of northern Ethiopia.

The statement was issued jointly by the EU delegations, diplomatic missions of 23 EU member states and the embassies of Canada, Norway and the UK in Addis Ababa.
