EU Approves €6.1bn Defence Procurement Package For Ukraine

The European Commission has approved 6.1 billion euros in new defence procurement for Ukraine, with the funding covering air and missile defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radars as Kyiv continues to face Russian attacks.

The allocation, approved on August 24, Ukraine’s Independence Day, is part of the 90 billion euro Ukraine Support Loan (UASL), according to the European Commission.

The latest approval brings total defence procurement plans already approved under the programme to 16 billion euros, of which 8.35 billion euros has been disbursed to ensure the delivery of critical military supplies to Ukraine.

The new funding comes as Russia intensifies attacks using ballistic missiles and drones. The European Commission recorded 376 missile strikes in July, increasing the need for additional air and missile defence capabilities.

“On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Europe shows our support is unfaltering and concrete,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. “As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its skies. Europe stands with Ukraine and we will deliver what it needs, when it needs it.”

The procurement is intended to help Ukraine receive defence supplies on time and at the scale required to strengthen its defence and resilience against Russia’s ongoing aggression.
