EthSwitch said its EthioPay-IPS platform processed more than one million transactions in a single day for the first time, with the total value of payments exceeding five billion birr, marking a new milestone for Ethiopia’s interoperable digital payments system.

The national payment switch operator also received international recognition alongside global payment technology company BPC after the two institutions won The Asian Banker’s “Best Financial Inclusion Technology Initiative in Africa for 2026” award.

The milestone reflects the accelerating adoption of interoperable digital payments across Ethiopia’s financial sector, where banks, microfinance institutions, payment service providers and fintech platforms increasingly rely on shared payment infrastructure for real-time transactions.

EthSwitch Chief Executive Yilebes Addis said the achievement demonstrates the growing role of interoperable instant payments within Ethiopia’s financial ecosystem.

“As EthSwitch builds Ethiopia’s national digital payments infrastructure, reaching one million EthioPay-IPS transactions in a single day marks a significant milestone for the country’s payments ecosystem,” he said.

Powered by BPC’s SmartVista platform, EthioPay-IPS supports account-to-account and wallet-to-wallet transfers, interoperable QR payments, request-to-pay services, recurring payments and alias-based payment functions.
