Ethiopia’s Government Procurement Service has generated more than 429 million birr by selling 326 used vehicles collected from 44 public institutions during the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year, as the state seeks to turn out-of-service assets into revenue.

The vehicle sales generated 153.8 million birr more than in the previous fiscal year, according to the service’s performance report, highlighting a significant increase in proceeds from the disposal of government vehicles.

Gojjam Tadele, the service’s public relations and communications executive, told Ahadu Radio that the disposal also freed 5,868 square metres of land previously occupied by the vehicles.

The Government Procurement Service is responsible for purchasing goods on behalf of federal budgetary institutions and public higher education institutions, as well as disposing of government properties and vehicles that are no longer in service.

During the fiscal year, the service also completed procurement worth more than 9.2 billion birr for common-use goods required by federal budgetary institutions and higher education institutions. Letters confirming tender awards were issued to successful bidders, Gojjam said.

The service was established under Council of Ministers Regulation No. 184/2002, with its mandate covering centralised procurement for federal institutions and the sale of government assets that have reached the end of their service.
