Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH) is nearing completion of the design phase for a vaccine manufacturing facility as Ethiopia advances plans to establish domestic vaccine production, according to the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA).

EFDA Director General Heran Gerba said the project will be implemented under EIH with the objective of expanding vaccine supply and strengthening the country's medical self-reliance.

According to Ahadu Radio, the initiative aligns with the African Union's target of enabling the continent to meet 60 percent of its vaccine demand through local production by 2040.

Heran said the authority has introduced new digital systems to strengthen oversight of vaccine safety and quality. She added that a regulatory framework has also been introduced to improve monitoring of clinical trials involving human participants.

Ahadu Radio reported that the authority is streamlining licensing procedures to accelerate the transition of research activities into implementation.

According to Heran, a laboratory under construction in Addis Ababa's Qality area will enable Ethiopia to conduct vaccine testing once completed.

She said local vaccine manufacturing is expected to strengthen the country's disease prevention capacity while enhancing its standing in the global health sector.
