Ethiopia’s Security Situation May Change at Any Time, US Embassy Says

The security situation in northern Ethiopia remains unpredictable despite a decline in fighting in Tigray and Afar, the US Embassy in Addis Ababa has warned, advising American citizens against travel to three regions.

In a security update, the embassy said conditions could change at any time. The warning comes after federal authorities announced a new federal administration for Tigray on October 16.

Flights remain suspended at the airports in Axum and Shire, according to the embassy, which advised travellers to contact their airlines directly for ticket bookings and updates on flight operations.

The embassy urged US citizens to reconsider travel to Ethiopia and advised against travelling to Amhara, Tigray and Afar regions, particularly northern Afar, for any reason. Those already in the affected areas were advised to leave if it was safe to do so.

The embassy also cautioned against false and misleading social media reports about the security situation, urging American citizens to verify information through multiple reliable sources.
