Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Commission Urges Public to Reject False Information on Dialogue Process

Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Commission has urged citizens to rely on official updates and protect themselves from misinformation as the country’s first national dialogue conference continues. The commission said some individuals and groups have been circulating inaccurate information on social media regarding the progress of the national dialogue process, including claims that the conference had faced obstacles in starting.

In a statement issued on July 18, 2026, the commission said it respects freedom of expression and welcomes constructive opinions and discussions, but it would continue monitoring and clarifying false information that could mislead the public. The commission said the national dialogue belongs to all Ethiopians and that its success depends on citizens’ commitment to participate with patience, wisdom and a shared sense of responsibility.

The dialogue conference, which began on July 15, 2026, is proceeding according to procedures established by the commission. During the first four days of the conference, the commission said it focused on preparing participants for their national responsibilities through orientation activities, including sessions aimed at strengthening understanding and psychological readiness for the dialogue process.

The commission said these preparatory activities are part of the wider national dialogue conference and should not be interpreted as delays or interruptions to the process. It added that the dialogue is at an early stage and that its outcomes will require time, calling on citizens to remain patient as discussions continue.

The commission also encouraged Ethiopians to follow updates from the institution and media organisations present at the dialogue venue to receive accurate information about the process. This effort aims to ensure the national dialogue remains transparent and inclusive for all participants.
