Ethiopia’s Media Regulator Shuts JFM 106.7 for Six Months Over Content Compliance Failures

Ethiopia’s Media Authority has suspended JFM 106.7 from broadcasting for six months after finding that the radio station failed to comply with programming requirements under its licence agreement. The regulator said the decision followed content monitoring and inspection activities that identified repeated shortcomings in the station’s programming practices. The suspension will remain in place until JFM fulfils the obligations outlined in its broadcasting licence.

As reported by Dagu Journal, JFM 106.7 was required to allocate 60 percent of its weekly airtime to programmes related to the area covered by its licence, while using the remaining airtime for national, regional and other content. The authority said the station did not meet this requirement. The regulator also cited failures in delivering programmes intended to educate, inform and entertain audiences, as well as shortcomings in providing nationally focused content required under the licence agreement.

The Media Authority said it had previously provided feedback and issued both verbal and written warnings to the station, but the required improvements were not achieved. The suspension took effect from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, and will continue for six months. During this period, JFM 106.7 will not be permitted to broadcast using its allocated frequency.

The authority said the Ethiopian Communications Authority has also been informed of the decision, and the frequency assigned to JFM 106.7 will remain unavailable for use while the suspension is in effect. This action reflects the regulator's commitment to enforcing broadcasting standards across the country.

The suspension is expected to serve as a reminder to other media outlets about the importance of adhering to licence conditions and regulatory requirements.
