Ethiopia's Electricity Generation Rises 21% as Installed Capacity Tops 9,700 MW

Ethiopia generated 35,734 gigawatt-hours of electricity during the 2025/26 fiscal year, a 21 percent increase from the previous year, according to figures provided by Ethiopian Electric Power and reported by Ahadu Radio. Citing information from the state-owned utility, Ahadu Radio reported that electricity generation has continued to rise over the past three fiscal years, reaching 35,734 gigawatt-hours in 2025/26 from 29,480 gigawatt-hours in 2024/25 and 20,596 gigawatt-hours in 2023/24.

The increase reflects the expansion of generation infrastructure as Ethiopian Electric Power works to meet growing demand for electricity across the country. According to the utility, additional generating facilities commissioned during the year include units of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the Aisha II wind power project and the Asella wind power project.

Those additions have more than doubled Ethiopia's installed electricity generation capacity to 9,730 megawatts, Ethiopian Electric Power said. The utility added that it is continuing to develop new power generation projects to supply the country's growing electricity demand more reliably.
