Ethiopian Startup Seeks to Build Digital Layer for Urban Services

Ethiopian technology startup Orbix Technologies has launched an integrated digital platform aimed at connecting parking, electric-vehicle charging, citizen reporting and tourism services, as local technology companies seek to build digital solutions around increasingly complex urban needs.

The Orbix platform brings services that are typically handled through separate systems, providers and processes into a single digital ecosystem. The company said the platform is designed to make it easier for users to find and pay for parking, locate and reserve EV charging stations, report problems in their communities and access information on tourism and recreational destinations.

At the centre of the platform is a smart-parking service that allows drivers to digitally search for available parking spaces, reserve them and make payments. The service is intended to reduce the friction involved in finding parking while bringing transactions into a digital system.

Orbix EV is the second component, targeting the growing use of electric vehicles in Ethiopia. It allows users to locate charging stations, reserve charging slots and make digital payments, linking mobility infrastructure with a single consumer-facing platform.

The company has also introduced iHub, a citizen reporting and participation platform. Users can submit reports on road damage, traffic accidents and disruptions to public services, supported by photos and videos, and send them to the relevant government authorities.

The fourth component, Ethio Parks, focuses on tourism destinations, parks and recreational sites. It is designed to promote destinations digitally while bringing related services together on the platform.

The combination gives Orbix a business model that extends beyond a single urban service. Rather than focusing solely on parking or electric mobility, the company is positioning the platform as an interface between citizens, service providers and public institutions across several areas of urban life.

Orbix said the platform is being developed with a long-term ambition of contributing to Ethiopia’s technology ecosystem before expanding beyond the domestic market.
