Ethiopian Political Groups Announce Transitional Government Plan

A coalition of Ethiopian political and armed groups has announced plans to establish an inclusive transitional government following what it describes as the removal of the Prosperity Party-led government.

The Cooperation of Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, known as “Alliance for Survival”, said its principal objective is to open a new transitional phase led by a transitional charter and a government representing the country’s different nations, nationalities and peoples.

In a statement, the coalition accused the Prosperity Party government of contributing to conflict, displacement, poverty and the deterioration of the country’s political and economic conditions. The government has not responded to the allegations contained in the statement.

The coalition said its proposed transitional arrangement would seek to safeguard the rights of Ethiopians, restore the rule of law, end armed conflicts and establish conditions for what it describes as lasting peace.

It said the immediate task of the groups involved is to jointly confront what it called a threat to the survival of Ethiopia’s peoples and national security, followed by the establishment of a transitional government.

According to the statement, the proposed transitional phase would focus on protecting the human and democratic rights of Ethiopians without discrimination and creating a political framework for a new phase of governance.

The coalition said the transitional government would be established under a transitional charter after the removal of the current government. It described the initiative as a “historical responsibility” for the participating forces.

The groups named in the statement include the Amhara Fano National Movement, the Oromo Liberation Army, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the Ogaden National Liberation Front, the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Front, the Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement and the Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement, alongside other legally established political forces.

The coalition also accused the Prosperity Party government of relying on foreign powers and compromising Ethiopia’s interests, allegations that remain claims made by the coalition.

It said the proposed transition would be intended to address conflict, restore security and establish a political order in which the rights of the country’s different communities are protected.
