The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has said more than 10 Orthodox Christians were killed in a series of attacks in East Arsi Zone, Oromia region, as violence also led to the burning of a century-old church, destruction of property and displacement of residents.

The Church said the attacks affected areas including Asseko woreda, Teltata Chefa kebele, Kara Kufte and Shirka woreda, with incidents reported since May 1, 2024 Ethiopian calendar. It attributed the violence to armed groups operating in the area.

In Asseko woreda’s Teltata Chefa kebele, the Church reported that more than 10 Orthodox faithful were killed in what it described as a targeted attack. In a separate incident in Shirka woreda, two Orthodox youths were also killed after being taken from their home.

The Church said one of the youths was killed with a bladed weapon while the other was shot, adding that their burial took place on May 2, 2024 Ethiopian calendar at Gadaw Mahdere Sibhata St Mary Church.

Religious infrastructure was also affected. The Church said St Gabriel Church in Teltata Chefa kebele, a 101-year-old building, was completely destroyed by fire during the violence.

Residents were forced to flee their homes during the attacks, with worshippers reportedly carrying church relics as they escaped, while property and livestock were looted.
