Ethiopian MP Urges Government to Make Security the Foundation of Growth

Ethiopian lawmaker Mebratu Alemu (PhD) has called on the government to place lasting peace, national reconciliation and the rule of law at the centre of its agenda for the next term.

Speaking in parliament, he said economic and development achievements cannot be sustained without security and stability across the country.

Mebratu described peace as the foundation on which all other gains depend and urged stronger policies to accelerate national dialogue and protect citizens.

He also questioned the government’s plans to address the rising cost of living, create jobs and promote a more inclusive economy.

The MP highlighted infrastructure gaps in regions such as Benishangul-Gumuz, where access to roads, electricity and telecommunications remains limited.

He urged the government to adopt a dedicated infrastructure plan to address regional disparities in the coming fiscal year.

Mebratu urged the government to ensure equitable development and address youth unemployment and inflation more effectively.

His intervention reflects growing calls within parliament for a balanced approach that prioritises both economic growth and lasting peace.

The remarks come as Ethiopia prepares for the next phase of its development strategy amid ongoing security challenges in several regions.
