The Ethiopian Media Authority has lifted restrictions on seven of Deutsche Welle’s nine reporters in Ethiopia, the broadcaster said, while confirming that two staff members remain permanently suspended. DW described the permanent suspensions as “strongly condemnable.”

The authority has also requested that Deutsche Welle provide evidence regarding reports it claims are inaccurate or in violation of Ethiopian law. The initial temporary ban affected journalists reporting for DW across Ethiopia on October 21, 2025.

At the time, DW said the authority had accused the station and its reporters of violating Ethiopian laws and regulations and failing to adhere to professional ethics.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned the temporary suspension, calling it an act of intimidation designed to restrict access to independent information, particularly regarding the conflict in the Amhara region.
