The Ethiopian Embassy in Pretoria has urged Ethiopian nationals living in South Africa to exercise caution amid concerns over possible attacks and rights violations targeting migrants.

In a statement, the embassy said it is closely monitoring the situation and is maintaining communication with South African authorities regarding the safety of Ethiopian citizens and other migrants.

The embassy said the South African government has repeatedly stated that it will provide protection against violence targeting migrants and ensure that incidents are handled according to the law. It added that security measures are expected to be strengthened in the coming days.

However, the embassy said there are still indications of possible risks involving unlawful actions and attacks against migrants in some areas.

The mission advised Ethiopians across South Africa to take precautions in their daily activities, maintain close contact with local authorities and community organisations, and use available communication channels to exchange information and respond to potential security threats.

The embassy said it will continue monitoring developments and engaging with relevant authorities to support the safety of Ethiopian citizens in the country.
