Ethiopian content creators have gained a new platform to monetise their audiences, following the launch of Sydro, a social media application developed by local technology company Infra Tech.

The platform is designed to allow content creators to receive financial support from followers in Ethiopia and abroad through gifts and tips. It integrates local payment systems including Telebirr and Chapa, according to Kedamawi Mulu Alem, founder and chief executive of Infra Tech.

The launch comes as Ethiopian creators continue to build large audiences on international platforms but face difficulties accessing some creator-monetisation and payment services.

Sydro allows creators to withdraw 70 percent of the value of gifts they receive from their videos, according to the company. The platform also targets Ethiopians living abroad, enabling diaspora users to support local creators through its gifting and tipping functions.

Infra Tech said the platform is intended to create a channel through which Ethiopian digital content can generate income while using payment infrastructure available in the local market.

The application was launched at an event at Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa attended by company executives, content creators and technology professionals.
