Addis Ababa’s construction regulator has suspended contractors and fined more than 50 developers in the past six months as part of a crackdown on unlicensed building activity and safety violations, according to Menaharia Radio.

The Addis Ababa Construction Permit and Control Authority said enforcement measures have been stepped up against developers, contractors and consultants operating outside regulatory directives. In addition to financial penalties imposed on developers, contractors found in breach have faced suspension of their business licences.

Engineer Fiktor Belachew, deputy director-general of the Authority, told Menehariya Radio that persistent safety gaps and construction quality deficiencies have led to multiple injuries among residents. He said some operators proceed without permits, while others fail to provide adequate protective equipment for workers during construction.

The Authority has conducted seven rounds of awareness campaigns since 2025 in an effort to address recurring violations. Officials said the initiative has led to improvements, though non-compliance remains a concern in parts of the sector.

Regulators stated that inspections will continue to target unauthorised construction sites and projects that neglect worker safety standards, signalling sustained oversight of building activity in the capital.
