Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s flagship airline, has inaugurated three new aircraft maintenance facilities valued at $150 million, in a move aimed at expanding its technical capabilities and capturing a greater share of the global aviation services market.

The projects, comprising a component maintenance workshop, a central warehouse, and a two-bay hangar, were officially launched during a ceremony held in Addis Ababa, attended by board chairman Lt. Gen. Yilma Merdasa, Group CEO Mesfin Tasew, senior government officials and industry partners.

The expansion is part of the airline’s long-term strategy to deepen its technical capabilities, reduce reliance on foreign service providers, and generate new revenue through third-party maintenance contracts, under its vision 2035 strategic roadmap.

“These facilities are designed to support our rapid fleet expansion and serve growing demand for MRO services in Africa and beyond,” said Mesfin Tasew, adding that the new infrastructure incorporates the latest aviation technologies and international standards.

Ethiopian Airlines operates the largest and most modern fleet on the continent and has steadily grown its in-house aviation ecosystem, which includes pilot training, cargo logistics, and aircraft assembly partnerships. The MRO segment is seen as a critical pillar in this integrated model.

The airline already offers services to several African and international carriers and is seeking to attract more clients through expanded capacity and upgraded technical services.
