Ethiopian Airlines will deploy amphibious aircraft capable of landing on both water and conventional runways to expand domestic tourism services.

Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tassew told local media that the aircraft are scheduled to begin trial operations in March and June. The planes are intended to provide service to destinations that currently lack traditional airport infrastructure. If the trial proves successful, additional aircraft may be introduced.

The move builds on a previous fleet acquisition in which Ethiopian Airlines added De Havilland Canada Twin Otter Classic 300‑G aircraft to its fleet. These aircraft are designed for short takeoff and landing operations and will be equipped with amphibious landing gear, allowing them to operate from both land and water surfaces.

The aircraft are expected to improve access to remote tourism destinations and offer greater flexibility for travellers. Mesfin emphasised that the service aims to enhance domestic connectivity and provide new options for accessing Ethiopia’s lakes and other remote sites.
