Ethiopia Wins BRICS Support for COP32 Presidency Bid

Ethiopia has secured the backing of BRICS members for its presidency of the United Nations climate change conference COP32, adding support from the expanded bloc to its bid to host and lead the 2027 climate summit in Addis Ababa, as reported by The Reporter.

The endorsement was included in the New Delhi Declaration adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit, held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. BRICS leaders said they supported Ethiopia’s UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP32 presidency.

The declaration comes after Ethiopia secured the African Group’s endorsement to host COP32, positioning Addis Ababa to host the UN climate negotiations in 2027. The summit is expected to bring together governments, international organisations, businesses and civil society around negotiations on climate finance, emissions reduction and adaptation.

BRICS’ backing adds the bloc’s collective support to Ethiopia’s climate diplomacy as the country seeks to use the COP presidency to advance African priorities in global climate negotiations.

The declaration placed Ethiopia’s COP32 presidency within BRICS’ wider discussion of climate action and sustainable development. Leaders also reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation on climate change and the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Ethiopia’s COP32 role would give the country responsibility for steering negotiations at a time when developing countries are pressing for greater access to climate finance and stronger support for adaptation and climate-resilient development.

The BRICS endorsement comes alongside the bloc’s support for other Ethiopian international priorities. The New Delhi Declaration also backed Ethiopia’s accession process to the World Trade Organization and expressed support for its candidacy for an expanded seat on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
