Ethiopia’s Military Movements Raise Questions About Red Sea Access

Ethiopia has increased its military presence in the northern part of the country, raising questions about its long-term ambitions to gain direct access to the Red Sea. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reportedly deployed troops, tanks, and other heavy weapons near the Tigray region, where government forces remain in a tense standoff with Tigrayan fighters.

The military buildup comes as the region continues to recover from the devastating civil war that officially ended with a fragile peace agreement in 2022. Although large-scale fighting has stopped, tensions between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan forces remain high.

According to The Wall Street Journal, some analysts believe the troop movement could also be connected to Ethiopia’s long-standing interest in securing direct sea access, which the landlocked country has lacked since Eritrea gained independence in the 1990s.

Ethiopian officials say the deployment is aimed at strengthening border security and maintaining stability. However, observers note that the situation could carry wider implications for regional security and trade routes if tensions escalate.
