Ethiopia will host its first national crop protection and fertiliser expo in Addis Ababa later this month, as policymakers and agribusinesses intensify efforts to modernise farming and improve food security in one of Africa’s largest agricultural economies.

The three-day exhibition, branded “Grow Ethiopia”, will take place from May 22 to May 24, 2026 at the Addis Ababa Exhibition Center, according to organisers.

The event is being coordinated by We-Link, a local firm that said the expo aims to strengthen agricultural productivity by promoting modern farming knowledge, crop protection technologies and fertiliser solutions.

Organisers said the event will bring together key stakeholders across Ethiopia’s agricultural value chain, including agricultural input importers and distributors, policymakers, government institutions and commercial farmers.

The expo comes as Ethiopia pushes to improve agricultural output and reduce vulnerability to recurring food supply pressures driven by climate shocks, pests and low farm productivity. Agriculture remains the backbone of the Ethiopian economy, contributing more than one-third of gross domestic product and employing the majority of the population, according to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Despite the sector’s central role in the economy, agricultural productivity in Ethiopia continues to face constraints linked to limited use of fertilisers, crop protection systems, irrigation and modern farming technologies. Industry studies show improved access to agricultural inputs remains critical for raising yields and stabilising production.

Organisers said bringing together businesses, policymakers and farmers on a single platform is expected to create stronger market linkages while facilitating the transfer of technology, expertise and industry knowledge across the sector.

Discussions during the event are expected to focus on improving access to agricultural inputs, encouraging efficient farming practices and expanding collaboration between the public and private sectors in agricultural development.
