Ethiopia Spent 108 bln Birr on Road Construction and Maintenance

The Ethiopian Roads Administration spent 108 billion birr in the 2025/26 financial year on road construction and maintenance, including 24 major projects, the administration said.

Asrat Asale (PhD), head of the administration’s communications team, told Ahadu Radio that the authority carried out maintenance on 105km of heavy concrete roads, 12.7km of federal major roads and 580km of new and express roads during the year. It also upgraded 238km of roads.

Major projects included the Modjo-Hawassa Expressway, the Batu-Arsi Negele road, the Ambo-Woliso road and roads around Ankober, according to Asrat.

The administration attributed some of the challenges facing road works to disruptions in fuel supplies and higher fuel prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Limited fuel availability affected vehicles and construction machinery, while higher fuel costs increased pressure on road projects.

Overloading by vehicles on major asphalt roads has also contributed to road deterioration, Asrat said, with drivers carrying loads above permitted limits.

The major projects under implementation require at least four years to complete, according to Asrat. The administration is therefore focusing on completing the remaining projects within their planned schedules, he said.
