Ethiopia Set To Launch First Dental Healthcare Recognition Programme

Ethiopia is set to introduce its first recognition programme for dental healthcare institutions and professionals, with the initiative seeking to promote service quality, clinical standards and innovation across the sector.

The programme, organised by the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority (AAFDA) in partnership with Roba Multimedia and Events, will recognise dental institutions that demonstrate strong performance in areas including patient care, clinical competence, hygiene, infection prevention and community impact.

Organisers said the first edition of the programme is scheduled for Tikimt 28, 2019, and is expected to become an annual event.

The initiative comes as the number of private dental clinics and specialised dental services in Addis Ababa grows, creating a need for stronger quality standards and greater professional exchange within the sector.

Muluemebet Tadesse, director-general of AAFDA, said the programme would provide recognition to institutions that demonstrate strong performance in patient care and clinical practice while encouraging professionals to improve their services.

Beyond recognising individual clinics, the organisers said the programme is intended to create a platform for experience-sharing and capacity building among dental institutions. It will also seek to encourage the expansion of dental centres that meet international standards in Addis Ababa.

The programme will include awards for institutions that make effective use of modern dental technologies, demonstrate good practices in infection prevention and control, and provide child-friendly treatment environments. Awards will also cover excellence in cosmetic dentistry.

Other categories will recognise facilities that provide accessible services for people with disabilities, institutions demonstrating strong patient-service standards, high-performing dental laboratories and organisations that have made significant contributions to public awareness of oral and dental health.

The organisers also plan to use the programme as a link between international organisations and specialists and the domestic dental market, with the stated aim of facilitating knowledge and technology transfer.

They said the longer-term objective was to position Addis Ababa as a dental healthcare hub in Africa, with the recognition programme to be held annually under professional and quality standards.

Communication channels on social media have already been opened to provide public access to information about the programme, while the organisers said an official website had also been developed.
