Ethiopia Secures $30m Green Climate Fund Grant for Climate Resilience

Ethiopia has secured a 30 million US dollar grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to finance climate adaptation measures targeting vulnerable households, as the country seeks to strengthen its capacity to cope with the effects of climate change ahead of hosting COP32 in 2027.

The funding, approved at the Fund's 46th board meeting in Songdo, South Korea, will support a project targeting selected localities across the country. It will finance interventions in water access, climate-smart agriculture, watershed management and livelihood diversification, with women and other vulnerable groups identified as priority beneficiaries.

The project, titled Building Climate Change Resilience of Vulnerable Households in Selected Localities of Ethiopia, builds on an earlier initiative financed by the Adaptation Fund. The new grant is expected to extend adaptation efforts initiated under that programme through additional climate financing.

The Ministry of Finance will coordinate implementation with relevant sector ministries, drawing on its status as a Direct Access Accredited Entity of the GCF. This arrangement allows the ministry to engage directly with the Fund in securing and managing climate finance.

Tiguist Fisseha, state minister of finance, said the approval would contribute to the country's climate resilience priorities. She called for climate finance to be accessible, predictable and responsive to developing countries' needs, with greater attention to implementation and measurable outcomes.

Her remarks come as Ethiopia prepares to host COP32 in Addis Ababa in 2027. The government is seeking stronger engagement from the GCF in financing its climate priorities, while identifying the Fund's third replenishment as an opportunity to mobilise additional resources for adaptation.

Fisseha also welcomed the GCF's institutional reforms and efforts to strengthen its regional presence. Ethiopia intends to use its COP32 leadership to advance African climate priorities and promote closer alignment between climate commitments, financing and implementation.
