South Africa has agreed to investigate recent incidents of violence against Ethiopian nationals and will release the findings once the probe is completed. Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the commitment through diplomatic channels.

The matter was raised during high-level discussions, including talks between Foreign Minister Dr Gedion Timothewos and his South African counterpart on the sidelines of a BRICS meeting. Both sides agreed to continue engagement on protective measures.

In Addis Ababa, Deputy Foreign Minister Berhanu Tsegaye summoned South Africa’s ambassador for clarification. Plans are underway to dispatch a joint delegation to South Africa to assess the situation and explore solutions.

The incidents are part of recurring violence targeting foreign nationals, including Ethiopians, in urban townships where many migrants run small businesses. Human rights groups have linked such events to broader xenophobic patterns during times of economic strain.

Ethiopia said it will continue monitoring the situation closely through diplomatic channels while preparations for the delegation proceed.

The government emphasised the importance of protecting the safety and welfare of its nationals living and working in South Africa.
