Ethiopia has taken delivery of 12 Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets and expects to receive four batteries of S-400 air defence systems, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said, announcing an expansion of the country’s military capabilities.

In a social media statement, Abiy said the fighter jets had been delivered under an agreement with the Russian government, with the shipment arriving a year ahead of schedule.

He thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for facilitating the delivery, describing the acquisition as a milestone in Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities and protect national sovereignty.

The Su-35 is a multirole fighter aircraft designed for air superiority and ground-attack missions. The S-400 is a Russian-made surface-to-air missile system designed to intercept aircraft and certain missile threats.

Abiy said the acquisitions would strengthen the readiness of Ethiopia’s defence forces and improve their ability to deter potential aggression. He also said the fighter jets would place Ethiopia among the leading countries in sub-Saharan Africa in operating the aircraft.
