Ethiopia Says It Created 19 Million Jobs In Five Years

Ethiopia says it created more than 19 million domestic jobs over five years, while expanding overseas employment, vocational training and financing for small enterprises as the government sought to widen access to work, Ahadu Radio reports.

The country created 19,040,639 jobs between the years 2022 and 2026, Muferiat Kamil, minister of Labour and Skills, said at a forum reviewing the ministry’s five-year performance.

A further 1,660,981 Ethiopians benefited from overseas employment programmes during the period, according to the minister, highlighting the growing role of foreign labour markets in the government’s employment strategy.

The ministry’s figures also point to a large expansion in skills training. More than 20 million people took part in short-term training programmes during the five years, while technology-transfer activities exceeded their planned targets, Muferiat said.

Enterprise development was another component of the programme. The government helped establish market linkages worth 295 billion birr for enterprises, exceeding the ministry’s target, according to the minister.

It also provided 166 billion birr in government-backed credit support to enterprises and prepared 623,026 hectares of land for enterprise development, she said.

The figures were presented as part of the ministry’s review of its five-year development programme, with employment creation, skills development and enterprise support identified as continuing priorities.
