The Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations and the Qatar Chamber are considering the establishment of a Joint Business Council to deepen trade and investment ties between Ethiopia and Qatar.

The proposal was discussed during talks between Zahara Mohamed, president of the Addis Chamber, and Rashid bin Hamad Al-Athba, second vice-president of the Qatar Chamber, alongside other officials from the two business organisations.

The proposed council is expected to provide a platform for businesses from both countries to identify investment opportunities, develop commercial partnerships and address issues affecting bilateral trade and investment.

The discussions also covered the organisation of business delegation visits and joint business forums as ways of bringing companies from the two countries into closer contact.

During the meeting, Zahara presented Ethiopia’s investment opportunities and recent macroeconomic reforms, as well as incentives available to foreign investors. She particularly pointed to opportunities in agriculture, healthcare and manufacturing, alongside trade in spices, meat, flowers, coffee, vegetables and fruit.

Qatari investors expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities in Ethiopia and expanding their participation across different sectors, according to the Addis Chamber.

The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen the relationship between the chambers and increase private-sector engagement between the two countries.

A Joint Business Council would give the chambers a more structured mechanism for facilitating business-to-business engagement, while trade delegations and joint forums could provide opportunities for companies to explore specific investment and commercial projects.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing interest in strengthening their institutional relationship and expanding opportunities for businesses in Ethiopia and Qatar.
