Ethiopia is advancing plans to connect its railway network with all neighbouring countries as part of efforts to strengthen regional trade and support the African Continental Free Trade Area, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics said.

Speaking to Ahadu Radio, Minister Alemu Sime said rail investment has become a priority due to its long-distance capacity and its role in facilitating cross-border commerce. He noted that new corridors under development are designed to extend beyond domestic routes and link Ethiopia with Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan and other African markets.

Alemu highlighted the completed rail line from Kenya’s Moyale border as an example of progress, adding that Ethiopia aims to be an early mover on regional transport integration. He also said the existing railway partnership with Djibouti includes joint management of the line, describing it as a model that could be replicated with other countries.

The ministry said work is under way on multiple regional routes intended to ease movement of goods and strengthen Ethiopia’s position within the African Continental Free Trade Area.
