Ethiopia Hosts Global Parliamentary Intelligence Forum on Emerging Security Threats

Parliamentarians, intelligence experts and government officials from 43 countries have gathered in Addis Ababa for an international forum focused on strengthening cooperation in addressing evolving global security challenges.

The International Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Forum, established in 2014 by former US Congressman Robert Pittenger, is convening lawmakers and security professionals to discuss threats at the intersection of technology, law enforcement and national security.

The forum aims to bridge gaps between legislative bodies and intelligence and security institutions by improving dialogue and coordination on cross-border and technology-driven risks.

Discussions at the meeting will focus on cyber security, illicit finance, preventing the financing of terrorism, human trafficking and other emerging security challenges requiring cooperation among governments and international institutions.

Participants include Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives Speaker Tagesse Chafo, forum founder Robert Pittenger, Government Chief Whip Tesfaye Beljige, Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, and US Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga.

The forum is designed to bring together lawmakers and security practitioners from different regions to exchange experiences and develop approaches for addressing security threats that increasingly extend beyond national borders.

The gathering highlights Ethiopia’s growing role as a platform for international dialogue on security and intelligence cooperation in Africa.

Officials hope the forum will lead to stronger partnerships and better coordination on transnational security threats facing multiple countries.

The event is seen as an important opportunity for African nations to engage with global partners on emerging risks in a rapidly changing security environment.
