The Ethiopian government has increased retail prices for petroleum products by up to 8 birr, effective from 12:00 PM on Wednesday, the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration confirmed.

Under the revision, gasoline rose by approximately 7 birr per litre, and kerosene increased by about 8 birr. Gasoline, kerosene, and white diesel are now priced at 129.12 birr per litre.

Desalegn Mekonnen, director-general of the Petroleum and Energy Authority, stated that the price revision is part of the ministry’s regular assessment of domestic fuel rates, designed to keep them in line with import costs affected by international oil prices and currency exchange movements.

In recent weeks, public discussions have linked rising fuel prices to value added tax and excise duties, which together total 30 percent and have been in place since December. However, the ministry’s notice to suppliers did not cite any new tax measures as the basis for the latest increase.
