Ethiopia secured 46.8 million US dollars from electricity exports to Kenya, Djibouti, and Tanzania over the past four months of the current fiscal year, surpassing its target by 25 percent, Ethiopian Electric Power said.

The utility identified the three countries as its main external buyers, forming the core of its regional energy trade. Officials said the export revenues supplement the company’s domestic supply commitments, which include serving high-demand industrial clients, the Ethio-Djibouti Railway, and mining companies that settle payments in foreign currency.

Ethiopian Electric Power has been upgrading parts of its network as it works to improve reliability for local users. Communications director Moges Mekonnen said recent projects included replacing switchgear, installing transformers with higher capacity, and strengthening load-carrying systems at multiple stations.

He said the upgrades aim to reduce service interruptions and accommodate a growing customer base as distribution networks expand across the country.

The utility noted that its export capacity is tied to these improvements, allowing it to maintain domestic supply while selling surplus electricity to neighbouring markets.
