Ethiopia has prepared 8.5 billion seedlings for this year’s Green Legacy planting season. The government is strengthening monitoring through a newly developed digital database system.

The Ministry of Agriculture said the platform, developed with the Information Network Security Administration, will record plantation locations, seedling types, number of trees planted, and land coverage.

Yimer Dawud told Ahadu Radio that the system uses geo-reference technology and scientific methods for better monitoring. It will allow authorities to track where specific seedlings are planted and measure overall coverage.

Seedlings include indigenous species, food production plants, and varieties for soil conservation. They are being collected from federal, regional, and private nurseries.

Dawud addressed criticism of the Green Legacy initiative, saying claims that it lacks scientific basis stem from misunderstanding of the implementation process.

The digital system is part of efforts to make the Green Legacy campaign more transparent, efficient, and measurable.
