Ethiopia has rejected Egypt's accusations linking the floods in Sudan to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, calling them "baseless."

Egypt, in a recent statement issued by its Ministry of Water and Irrigation, had alleged that the recent floods in Sudan were caused by a management problem at the dam.

Following the accusation, the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy, in a statement issued today, October 5, 2025, called Egypt’s recent allegations “baseless” and “contrary to reality.”

“The statements made by Egyptian institutions regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the Nile River have become their main source of falsehood,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The latest manifestation of this long-standing Egyptian trend is the recent statement issued by the country’s Ministry of Water and Irrigation, which is full of false and contradictory information.”

Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy, Engineer Habtamu Itefa, followed up by saying, “The flood in Sudan could have been caused by the White Nile. If it were not for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the extent of the flood would have been much worse.

He also said The dam played a major role in reducing the damage.”
