Ethiopia has announced that the recently inaugurated Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has helped reduce flood risks in Sudan.
Ethiopia's statement comes amid criticism that the dam is responsible for the floods in Sudan.
The Sudanese government reportedly issued a flood warning on Saturday due to rising water levels in the Blue Nile and White Nile, two of the Nile's main tributaries.
The country's irrigation ministry announced on Sunday night that dams in the area had released excessive water, causing water levels to remain at their highest levels for four consecutive days.
The ministry also urged residents of Khartoum, the Nile River, White Nile, Sennar, and Blue Nile regions to be cautious, citing the potential for flooding to damage farmland and homes.
Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy, Engineer Habtamu Itefa, followed this up by saying; "The flood in Sudan could have been from the White Nile.
If it had not been for the Grand Renaissance Dam, the extent of the flood could have been much worse."
