The Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia has approved a directive to conduct trials through digital platforms, introducing electronic procedures into the justice system for the first time.
Court President Tewodros Mihret said the “Electronic Filing and Litigation” directive will allow case files and signatures to be submitted electronically and authorize courts to host hearings remotely. Witness testimony and sworn statements can also be delivered online, although confidential documents must still be submitted in person.
The directive, which will take effect in November, will apply across all federal courts as well as regional courts that handle federal cases. It is intended to reduce costs and improve efficiency in judicial proceedings, according to state media reports.
Ethiopia has, in recent years, rolled out digital services in other areas of government, including tax administration and business registration.
