Ethiopian regulators have acted following the circulation of a video on social media showing foreign supervisors assaulting an Ethiopian employee at Toyo Solar, a manufacturer operating in the Hawassa Industrial Park. The incident has drawn renewed attention to labour practices within the country’s industrial zones hosting foreign investment.

The Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) said both domestic and foreign investors are expected to comply fully with national laws and respect the rights of local employees. The Commission confirmed it is coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure administrative and legal measures are applied against those responsible.

Separately, the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC), which manages Hawassa Industrial Park, said it had completed an internal review and initiated the necessary administrative and legal actions against the foreign supervisor involved. The Ethiopian employee received medical care and has returned home in stable condition.

“The corporation will ensure that the appropriate legal and administrative actions are enforced,” the IPDC said, emphasising its commitment to maintaining a safe and compliant working environment for all employees in the park.

Both EIC and IPDC stressed that safeguarding labour standards and enforcing regulatory compliance remain top priorities.
