The first phase of the Shabelley Resort project in Ethiopia’s Somali region has been completed, marking a key milestone in the federal government’s tourism development strategy, Ethiopian News Agency reported.

The resort, covering roughly 385 hectares in the Fafen Zone about 29 kilometres from Jigjiga, the regional capital, is part of the federal “Dine for Nation” initiative, which aims to develop world-class tourism infrastructure across the country and stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and attract both domestic and international visitors.

A joint site inspection led by Minister of Irrigation and Lowlands Abraham Belay and Ahmed Shukri, Head of the Somali Region Urban Development and Construction Bureau, brought together senior officials and technical experts to review project progress and assess final preparations ahead of the resort’s official inauguration.

Officials toured completed facilities and evaluated multiple sections of the development in coordination with implementing institutions, expressing satisfaction with both the pace and quality of construction. Contractors were commended for delivering most works on schedule.

The inspection also included newly built communal housing units designed for low-income residents displaced by the project. Authorities described the housing initiative as part of the “Medemer State” policy, which underscores social responsibility and support for communities affected by large-scale development projects.
