Ethio telecom has launched a line of cloud-based smart devices and Workspace solutions under the brand Znexus, targeting the persistent digital usage gap across Ethiopia. The initiative seeks to make smartphones and cloud services more accessible, particularly for users in rural areas and those unable to afford traditional smartphones.

Znexus devices address these barriers by offering cloud-powered, low-cost handsets with extended battery life, simplified interfaces, preloaded digital services, and integrated cloud storage. Models in the lineup include the Znexus 127 Lite, 131 Lite, and 2028 Lite, all preloaded with services such as telebirr, educational content, social media apps, games, short dramas, and news.

In addition, Ethio telecom is introducing Cloud Workspace solutions designed for businesses and organizations. These solutions provide secure virtual desktops and applications accessible via Znexus devices, laptops, and thin clients, offering scalable resources, robust data security, and reduced IT overhead through a pay-as-you-go model.

Ethio telecom said that Znexus was designed to reduce entry barriers to digital access and enable individuals, businesses, and communities to participate fully in the digital economy. The company highlighted that bundled packages combining devices, connectivity, cloud storage, and applications will simplify adoption for users and organizations alike.

The launch builds on the company’s recent network expansion, which has achieved 71 percent 4G population coverage and 5G deployment in 26 towns. Despite improved coverage, many Ethiopians still rely on 2G or 3G feature phones. According to Ethio telecom, over 60 percent of mobile users in Sub-Saharan Africa remain offline, not because of coverage gaps but due to the high cost of devices and low digital literacy.

The Znexus initiative forms part of Ethio telecom’s “Next Horizon: Digital and Beyond 2028” strategy, which focuses on addressing the digital usage gap following significant network expansion.
