Ethio telecom has launched teleStream, an internet-based television platform delivered over its broadband and mobile networks, as the state-owned operator expands into digital content distribution.

The platform was officially unveiled on Friday at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa. Chief executive officer Firehiwot Tamiru said the service is intended to expand digital access for media owners and content creators. “The global entertainment industry is moving from satellite to digital platforms. We must modernize our system to keep pace,” she said.

Company data shows Ethiopia has 83 principal local media outlets, including 57 radio stations and 16 print publications, alongside 33 foreign media and 64 internet-based platforms, of which only around 2 percent currently use digital streaming technology.

The platform runs on the company’s fibre, 4G and 5G infrastructure and is hosted on its domestic telecloud system, reducing reliance on satellite transmission. The operator said local hosting improves streaming stability and lowers latency while limiting dependence on foreign satellite capacity.

The launch introduces a new distribution channel for broadcasters, production houses and independent content creators. Advertising agencies and brands can place targeted advertisements through the platform, while hotels and guest houses are being positioned as key institutional users.

TeleStream forms part of Ethio telecom’s “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy, which aims to expand revenue streams beyond traditional voice and data services. The company said the platform aligns with its broader fibre expansion and digital service automation programme as it deepens its role in Ethiopia’s evolving digital economy.
