The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to a letter written to the United Nations by accusing the Eritrean government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) of "scheming" to "deliberately" wage war on Ethiopia. The TPLF and Eritrea have responded.
In a letter sent to the UN yesterday, the TPLF said, "The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made false and politically motivated allegations against the TPLF and the people of Tigray."
"Such false allegations are a distraction from the federal government's repeated violations of the Pretoria Agreement," the TPLF said in a statement.
Eritrean Information Minister Yameen Gebremeskel, in a message posted on his X page, criticized Ethiopia's letter to the UN, saying it was "brazen and extremely misleading. They say, 'A giraffe that whips itself will roar'."
"For the past two years, the government has been repeatedly saying, 'If possible, legally, if not, militarily, secure a sovereign seaport,'" he said.
"This propaganda campaign aimed at territorial expansion is accompanied by reckless and baseless threats," he added.
In a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the TPLF said, "You should focus on the obstacles the peace process has encountered and the growing threat."
The TPLF has called the Ethiopian government's accusations "baseless"; "While the people-to-people ties between the people of Tigray and Eritrea ensure peace and regional reconciliation, baseless accusations will ignite another war in the region," it alleged.
