Eritrea has rejected claims by Ethiopia that it has supplied weapons to insurgent groups in the Amhara region.

The Ethiopian Federal Police reported that thousands of arms had been transferred from Eritrea to support Fano militants. In a statement on January 14, 2025, the police said they had seized over 56,000 units of military equipment, which they allege were intended to "collaborate with internal bandits and historical enemies" in support of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the situation reflects “a desire to initiate war.”

Responding to a Reuters inquiry, Eritrea’s Minister of Information, Yemane GebreMeskel, dismissed Ethiopia’s assertions as a fabricated narrative. He added that the Eritrean government has been preparing for conflict for approximately two years, claiming it is responding to perceived threats from Ethiopia.

The accusations mark the latest escalation in tensions between the two countries, with both sides denying responsibility while highlighting alleged hostile intentions on the other’s part.
