EPRP Postpones Planned Peaceful Rally Indefinitely

The Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (EPRP) has postponed a peaceful demonstration it had scheduled for May 8, 2026, announcing that the rally will not take place as originally planned.

Party officials said the protest, which had been called under a broader opposition coordination effort, has been suspended indefinitely following internal consultations among member groups.

The party's leadership said the decision was made after discussions within the coalition structure it participates in, adding that the move was intended to strengthen unity and avoid what it described as attempts to create internal divisions.

Officials said there had been efforts to portray the coordination platform as fragmented or weakened, particularly through online narratives, which they said risked undermining organisational cohesion. The party leadership said such claims had created tensions and confusion among members, but insisted that the matter had been addressed through engagement with experienced political actors within the alliance framework.

It added that the postponement was intended to allow for a more coordinated and strengthened mobilisation process, rather than a cancellation of political activity.

According to the party, the rally was expected to be part of a wider series of coordinated activities rather than a one-off event, with future mobilisation efforts planned in public spaces, including stadiums and major squares once preparations are complete. The party said the timing of the rescheduled demonstration will be announced later.
