Eni has started hydrocarbon production from Libya’s Bahr Essalam offshore gas field through a new compression project designed to maintain and increase gas output from the development.

The Sabratha Compression Project, implemented by Eni and Libya’s National Oil Corporation through the Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture, involves a new compression module installed on the Sabratha platform, located about 100 kilometres offshore.

The 1,600-tonne module is equipped with new compression trains and provides a total compression capacity of about 440 million standard cubic feet per day.

The facility allows production to continue under lower-pressure conditions, helping offset the natural decline of the Bahr Essalam field and improve gas recovery. Eni said the project is expected to add around 800 million cubic metres of gas annually, along with associated condensate.

The additional production is expected to support Libya’s electricity generation needs and strengthen gas availability for exports to Italy through the Greenstream pipeline.

Eni said the project demonstrates its continued cooperation with NOC in delivering offshore energy developments and strengthening Libya’s gas infrastructure.

The company is also advancing two other projects in Libya. The Bouri Gas Utilisation Project is undergoing tie-in and commissioning activities following the installation of the Bouri Gas Recovery Module, while the Structures A&E project is being developed to produce gas from two offshore fields.

Eni has operated in Libya since 1959 and is the country’s largest international energy company. The company reported equity production of about 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025 and said three development projects are currently underway in Libya with total planned investment of about 10 billion dollars.
