Ethiopia’s Enat Party has elected Yohannes Shewakena as its president at its second regular general assembly, where members also appointed a new leadership team and reviewed the party’s three-year performance and the outcome of the country’s seventh national election.

The assembly was held on Saturday, with party members from coordination offices across the country and invited guests in attendance, according to a statement issued by the party.

Shewakena was elected alongside Terumar as vice-president and Tibebu Yirga as secretary-general. Other appointments included Libanos Demissie as head of public relations, Ayalew Tesfaye in charge of membership recruitment and organisation, and Addis Belachew as head of political analysis.

Mekonnen Kebede was appointed to lead foreign relations, while Habtam Dagnaw will oversee information, communications and technology. Tewodros Beyene was named head of finance and fundraising.

The party also appointed officials to oversee training and capacity building, policy research and planning, disability affairs, women and youth affairs, legal and disciplinary matters, and auditing. Mengistu Aregahagn was named head of the editorial board.

Delegates reviewed and approved the party’s three-year activity and audit reports. They also discussed an assessment of the seventh national election.

Enat Party said it would continue its peaceful political struggle despite what it described as a narrowing political space. It called on its supporters and the wider public to support its efforts to advance peace, public safety and equal rights.
