The Ethiopian Media Authority has announced that it has revoked the registration certificate of Addis Standard, an online media outlet.

Addis Standard is a media outlet that provides news, analysis, and commentary in English, Amharic, and Oromo on the internet and on social media platforms.

The authority cited Addis Standard as the reason for the decision, saying that it “distributed reports that undermine media ethics, Ethiopian laws, and the national interests of the country and the people… despite repeated reminders and warnings, it refused to correct itself.”

In accordance with this decision, the registration certificate of Addis Standard Internet Media has been revoked as of February 24, 2025.

The Ethiopian Media Authority has taken similar measures against various media outlets and journalists this year.

After suspending the work permits of German Voice Radio’s Ethiopian reporters for months, the authority permanently suspended two reporters in December and granted licenses to the others.

In mid-January, the authority announced that the license of the online media outlet Wazema Radio had been “revoked” for failing to comply with “the Ethiopian Constitution and the Media Proclamation, as well as the guidelines and professional ethics.”

The agency also announced a week ago that the work permits of international news agency Reuters reporters would not be renewed.
