The Coalition of Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations for Election reported a range of procedural irregularities, security disruptions and alleged violations during observation of Ethiopia’s seventh general election, according to its preliminary findings released for events recorded up to midday on polling day.

The union said it deployed more than 3,000 observers across 2,258 polling stations nationwide to monitor voting conditions. While it described the early opening of many stations as peaceful, it noted that operational challenges and security-related interruptions emerged as the process unfolded.

The organisation recorded 203 concerns by midday, of which 40 have been verified while 163 remain under review. It is expected to release a full preliminary report within the next two to three days.

Security disruptions were among the most significant issues flagged, particularly in the Amhara region. The group reported that gunfire-related incidents in Central Gondar, North Wollo and South Gondar led to temporary suspension of voting activities.

Alongside security concerns, the report highlighted procedural and administrative irregularities in selected polling locations. These included the distribution of unstamped ballot papers, closure of ballot boxes without confirmation that they were empty, and instances where observers were denied entry.

The group also raised concerns about conduct within some stations in Addis Ababa and Hawassa, where representatives of the Prosperity Party were reportedly observed engaging in campaign-related activity during voting hours.
