The remains of eight miners who were trapped in a cave while mining opal in the Delanta district of South Wollo, Amhara region, have been discovered nearly two years after the incident.

Tesfaye Agazi, chairman of the Gold Cave Precious Metals Producers and Traders Association, of which the miners were members, told the BBC that the remains were located by other miners.

"There were people who had gone in from another direction and were working at night; when they went that way, they found the bodies of the eight," Tesfaye said.

The miners had been buried in the cave while attempting to extract opal ore. At the time, reports indicated that only around 33 meters of the 150-meter-long cave could be excavated. Rescue efforts were halted after six days due to soil collapses that made further excavation impossible.
